Lazarus STEWART Senior b.1683 Likely in Ireland

(Geni.com) - son of William Stewart (1660-) (George Freeman’s hypothesis) and Margaret Lowery – not proved (1666-)

brothers - Peter (c1685) and probably others.

Lazarus came from the North of Ireland by 1729 and located on land beside Swahatawro Creek in Lancaster County now Dauphin County, PA. in 1729, and was required to have it surveyed by the Proprietaries on 6 Mar 1739. A warrant for this land was not done.

His sons James (4), Peter & David settled in Rowan County, NC before 1757

Lazarus died 29 Sep 1744 (old style date) Paxtang Settlement, Lancaster Co, PA. Margaret died 12 Feb 1755 (new style date)

Margaret Stewart was sister of George Steuart of Donegal Township in Lancaster County, PA. George organised property for both families on 28 Feb 1728/1729 on Sawatara Creek, 500 acres for George and 300 acres for Lazarus Stewart, his brother-in-law.

James died & was Probated in Rowan on 2 Oct 1778 NC. His will names most of his family.

· David b. 1724 (son of Lazarus - Orphans Court) d. Jan 1798 Rowan County. He married Barbara Hamilton, living in North Carolina. David bought 100 acres north of Withrow Creek in Rowan County on 15 Jan 1755, He added another 473 acres there in 11 Oct 1778. There in 1794. His Estate was divided 25 Apr 1811 among his children Sally Cowan, Polly McReavy, Thomas Stewart, David Stewart and Lazarus Stewart by order of the court. Sarah, David, and Lazarus Stewart were living in Giles County Tennessee in 1812. (see David Stewart’s Story)

Lazarus died 29 Sep 1744 (old style date) Paxtang Settlement, Lancaster Co, PA. Margaret died 12 Feb 1755 (new style date)

Location in 1851. Petition before Lancaster Court of Sessions in August 1751 requesting a road be built through Paxton to Susquehanna River, signed by 27 petitioners including the Stewart brothers Lazarus, Peter and John and also James Stuart (married to Margaret Stewart), John Young (married to Mary Stewart) and Richard Sankey.

...the data from a Y-DNA and Big Y-DNA test from a confirmed male Stewart cousin on FTDNA and part of the Royal Stewart Family Project, shows the Lazarus Stewart line descended down from Sir John Stewart, Sheriff of Bute who was the illegitimate son or Robert II.

· Robert II was first in line of the Royal Stewart's.... The Stewart line of Bute is the only recognized Stewart "Clan" by the British government most likely because of the illegitimacy of Sir Robert, Sheriff of Bute....

Orphan's Court - Minutes of Orphan's Court of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

William Stewart in behalf of himself & his Brothers & Sisters, Uncles & Aunts. against Lazarus Stewart -- on Caveat. Applied 4 May 1762

In this case it appears the Lands in Contest were surveyed unto Lazarus Stewart Grandfather of William upon a Warrant obtained by him. That he died leaving John his eldest Son, Father of the Plaintiff, and Lazarus the Defendant and also Peter, James, David, Margaret & Margery his other Children. That the said John is since deceased leaving the Plaintiff his eldest Son & several other Children. That the said Lands since entering this Caveat have been valued to the said William the Plaintiff as eldest Son of the eldest Son of the said Lazarus the Grandfather by Order of the Orphans Court of Lancaster County at £ 375 to be paid to the Children of the said old Lazarus and the Representatives of such as were dead according to their respective Shares

(Dated probably around 1784 through affidavits stating that’s when Peter & David were living in North Carolina) The Distribution decision was in 1785

LAZARUS STEWART: Over a period of 40 years, George Edson, editor of the Stewart Clan Magazine (801 East-Park St., Olathe, Kansas) has amassed considerable data on this family. Lazarus-2 acquired land in 1729 In Lancaster, now Dauphin County, Pa., along with others of this family. His sons James, Peter and David settled in Rowan County, NC. prior to 1757. James (4) of this family is said to have gone to Georgia, perhaps with his son James5 who was born in Rowan County, Apr. 17, 1765. The latter was living in Heard County, Ga., Dec. 17, 1832, when he applied for a pension for Revolutionary service. He married March 25, 1794, Margaret McGee; she died April 21, 1841, aged 68, and he died Feb. 6, 1854, aged 88, was buried in Troup County. Rebecca Stewart, who married Larkin Strickland in Jackson County, Ga., March 13, 1821, is said by descendants to have been daughter of James (5), so the latter may have been the James enumerated In Jackson County in 1820. James5, had brothers William, Lazarus, George, David, John and Samuel, and they are believed to have been the men of those names found In the early Jackson County tax lists (see above). Lazarus5 moved to Marengo, Crawford County, Ind., by 1820 (probably c1812) and subsequently to Adams County, Ill., where he died in the 1830s.

It shows that James of 1765's father was also a James (of 1723), and indicates that 1723's father, Lazarus, probably had a father also named Lazarus. I hope Brock can shed more light on the two Lazaruses.

Biog: was born July —, 1775, in North Carolina, as stated in a biography of his son, Dr. Lewis B. Stewart of Marengo, IN. He married (1) in 1799 Anna Sloan. He and Anna moved to Georgia, where they lived for ﬁve years. In 1804 they moved to Kentucky, probably Allen County, they lived until 1813. They then moved to Harrison County, Indiana, and settled on the site where the town of Marengo was laid out in 1838. His brother Lazarus had come the year before, 1812, and the two families occupied adjoining farms. Indiana was then a territory, and that region was practically a wilderness. David Stewart was a farmer, blacksmith and Christian minister, was associate and probate judge of Crawford County, representative in the state legislature and presiding of officer of the first convention of the Whig party held in the county, 1840. Two of his sons became doctors, and two were preachers. His wife Anna died in 1846, and he married (2) in 1847 Elizabeth Springer, who survived him. He died Nov. —, 1854, in his 80th year. David b. 1724 (son of Lazarus Stewart and Margaret Steuart), d. Jan 1798 Rowan County. (Sworn plea by daughter Sarah Cowan to Rowan Court - August Session 1803) He married Barbara Hamilton (1730-1811) while living in North Carolina. He and his brothers James and Peter moved Rowan County about 1755

In 1753 David Stewart was a constable with his beat on the north side of Yadkin, from Muddy Creek and upward. (Old records of First Court of Rowan County)

David bought 100 acres north of Withrow Creek in Rowan County on 15 Jan 1755, He added another 473 acres there in 11 Oct 1778.

He was in Pennsylvania May 18,1784 when he and his sister Margaret signed a quitclaim deed for their parts of their father, Lazarus Stewart's estate. He was witness to his brothers

He may have died in Eastern Tennessee, where his son Thomas was located in 1781.

His own Estate was divided 25 Apr 1811 among his children Sally Cowan, Polly McReavy, Thomas Stewart, David Stewart and Lazarus Stewart by order of the court.

Sarah, David, and Lazarus Stewart were living in Giles County Tennessee in 1812.

The circuit court was authorised by Legislature on 16 Nov 1809. Thomas Stewart of Williamstown was appointed Judge of the Fourth District embracing the District of Giles on 22 Nov 1809 and served until 1836. Alfred Balch was Attorney General. His first assignment was the third Circuit Court held in June 1810, Judge Thomas Stewart presiding.

Thomas Stewart was in Pulaski, Tennessee for the 1820 and 1830 census. His son Richard S Stewart and his family were next door in the 1820 census

1771. Twice was the congregation at Hanover greatly depleted. First by the exodus into Virginia of forty or fifty families, who settled in Hanover County, where their beloved pastor, Rev. Dear Ken---Thanks for the e-mail. I have only several documents related to James Stuart b. 1808. He was first a seaman...and later, according to a deceased uncle...fought for the US in the Seminole Wars before settling in Philadelphia., where he became a "car-man"...that is horse and buggy transport man in Philadelphia. His son William Morrison Stuart maintained the horse and transportation business into the 1900's until WWI.

..[familytreedna.com Y-DNA] Kit number 209417 (Alford Kenith Stewart deceased) and shows William Pemberton Stewart, Jr. as distant ancestor. My line goes from Lazarus 1683 to David to Lazarus 1770-1850 to William Pemberton Stewart, 1804-1848.

Another cousin Richard C Stewart has kit number 14486 (Richard C Stewart – Brocks’s contact) going back to Lazarus Stewart on the Stewart or Royal Stewart Family Project also descends down through David Stewart through Thomas Hamilton Stewart.

I been in communication with Richard off and on for the last 8 years. He has not done the Big Y-DNA test but the STR's are 65/67 with kit # 209417 which is within the margin for reasonable mutations for 200 years....
